The Spread:
Before Hurricane Wilma destroyed the Presidente InterContinental Cozumel Resort & Spa, the four-star grand dame property ranked as the islands finest hotel. After a $25 million renovation the hotel reopened in October 2006 with a new level of luxury. The accommodations have always been oversized, but with 220 units instead of 253, the new rooms are even larger and feature such lavish touches as plasma televisions. Picturesque landscaped lawns, a vibrant lobby, and upmarket shops greet visitors to this resort, which boasts 1,000 feet of beachfront, a spa, and two swimming poolsone for families and the other a quiet pool for adults.
Why Families Like It:
At the daily complimentary Chiqui Club, kids ages five to 12 fashion kites, create crafts, feed fish, learn Spanish, build sandcastles, take nature walks, and enjoy beach play from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. year round. For wanna-be divers, the resort offers the PADI Bubblemaker program for children as young as eight, resort courses for older kids and adults, and excursions to Palancar Reef and other top diving spots in Cozumel.
Special Events & Activities:
Recovering from the damage of hurricane Wilma, Chankanaab National Park is one of the islands true treasures, just 1.25 miles from the Presidente InterContinental. Snorkeling is calm and clear, but the current can be extremely strong. Follow the snorkel trail on your own or with a guide. The park also has an archaeological area that gives a glimpse into the ancient Mayan culture. Best of all, both tourists and islanders go to Chankanaab, giving visiting kids a chance to meet local kids.
